In the Highland Blooms the Heather Empty
PostSubject: In the Highland Blooms the Heather   In the Highland Blooms the Heather EmptyThu May 03, 2012 4:14 am

Here are the lyrics/poetry of a beautiful old Scottish Ballad that I though you might enjoy. The author is unknown.

In The Highlands
Scotch Ballad

Verse 1

In the Highlands blooms the heather,
In the Highlands lies my heart,
Stormy winds and wint'ry weather,
Drifted me from friends apart;
Still the Scottish chimes come ringing,
Changes sad on early days,
Saddened mem'ries ever bringing,
Vain regrets for wand'ring ways,
Ah, absence makes our love grow stronger,
Parting makes our greeting sweet,
Weary heart, the way seems longer,
Which we press with home-ward feet.
In the Highlands blooms the heather;
In the Highlands lies my heart,
Stormy winds more wint'ry weather;
Ne'er can drift my soul apart.

Verse 2

In the Highlands dwells a maiden,
Pure as breath of mountain air,
Bright as bluebells dew-drop laden,
Fairest of the bonnie fair;
In her gentle breast a sorrow,
In her eye a tear for me;
Will he come again tomorrow?
Will he cross the moaning sea?
O I shall see thy sad face beaming,
bonnie brown-eyed loving Bess,
I shall see thy dark braids streaming,
I shall joy in thy caress.
In the Highlands blooms the heather;
In the Highlands lies my heart,
Stormy winds more wint'ry weather;
Ne'er can drift my soul apart.

That is so beautiful and so true to how the land lies here. Remind me Bob you do have Scottish Roots yes?

It simply tells of what our Island is about. You need to see it to get the hairs stood up on your neck. We are very proud and very happy with our retirement home.

Unfortunately my only Scot roots are what that old gentleman, pop Kerr, who lived with us when I was very young, planted in me. However, those are very, very strong roots and I have had a longing in my heart my entire life to visit this land that pop Kerr made so real to me in his stories. I am sure that one day, the good Lord willing I will get to visit, see the rugged beauty, and feel the history of this great land travel through and embrace my soul.
